csutil1.cs.wpi.edu (AKA cslog, ntp.cs)
CSUTIL1 is, as the name implies, a utility machine. It has normal WPICS user accounts, but doesn't accept logins. Its purpose is to support other machines in the WPICS Department, not to be an interactive login machine.
csutil1 services:
- NTP service to the department. ntp.cs.wpi.edu is a DNS alias that points to this machine.
- SYSLOG (error log) recording. cslog.cs.wpi.edu is another DNS alias pointing to this machine. This machine receives SYSLOG information from many machines in the department, and stores this information for the long term, in case it is needed.
- There are plans to use the machine for other purposes, i.e., SAMBA backup domain controller.
