Information on Creating an assistments server.

The most recently purchased assistments machines are as7, as8, as9, as10, as11. These machines are all Dell Power Edge 1950s, which for peverse reasons all run a 32-bit FreeBSD-7 operating system with PAE and CARP add-ons. This prevents the machines from having (USB) keyboard access once booted. Getting console-keyboard access on an as7-as11 console requires the performing of a semi-exotic procedure.

THey are all located in the CCC Machine room (card access required).

Occasionally the CS System Staff are called in to deal with an Assistments machine crash. This is not common, as11 crashed twice in about 280 days but its crashes are getting more comon (October 2011).

unplug machine, press power button, wait 30s, replug machine, switch on. Hope that the machine comes back up… works only with Dell PE1950s, like the ones found in the CCC Server room.
